2008 Grantees
Laredo Area Community Foundation 2008 Grant Applications
1. Alexander Memorial Library, La Salle County $1,000 This grant was awarded for the purpose of purchasing books for the library branch located in Encinal, Texas. The library hosts a small collection of books inside the Hecho en Encinal Building. Books are made available to residents and their children. In addition, books will be provided for GED classes for residents of Encinal.
2. Casa de Misericordia $5,000 A grant request was approved for the purchase of HEB gift cards for clients of Casa. When women leave the shelter to go on their own, they are provided with a grocery gift card so that they may purchase essential items for their family. It is a type of start-up fund for clients of domestic violence who have left their abuse environment.
3. Children's Advocacy Center of Laredo-Webb County $7,000 A grant was awarded for the purchase of a copier to be used by the Center. Part of the Center’s mission is to raise awareness of child abuse and the copier is to be used to reproduce literature for distribution. Workshops are hosted for school teachers and personnel and the literature is an integral part of the awareness campaign.
4. Junior Achievement of South Texas $5,600 The grant awarded was for the financial literacy program aimed at high school juniors and seniors. The program is taught by volunteers but the materials must be purchased. This grant will make the literature available to each volunteer instructor for distribution among their students.
5. Mercy Ministries of Laredo $4,700 A grant was awarded for the medication initial dosage program. Once clients are diagnosed and prescribed maintenance drugs, the clinic staff assists in obtaining government assistance for the clients. There is usually a time lapse between the time the patient is diagnosed and the processing of an assistance application. This grant will provide the funds for the patients’ initial dose of the needed medication in order to avoid a lapse in treatment.
6. South Texas Council on Alcohol & Drug Abuse $1,700.00 An important part of STCADA’s mission is to bring awareness to the problem of alcohol and drug abuse. This grant is to reproduce printed material for distribution to youth attending the annual Youth Leadership Camps. This material will assist in promoting a drug free life for those young people attending.
